CCXXXV. AoS28: Skeletons and Zombies

Adding to my collection of monsters for my AoS28-RoSD mashup. These skeletons were based on Mantic skeletons I bought second hand a while ago. I gave them all head and shield swaps, and most got new weapons as well. I'm not a fan of Mantic skellies, but even just a different head can go a long way with them.

The zombies are also from Mantic. Unlike their skeletons, their zombies are really good! I did very little converting here, it was mostly messing with their faces a little bit. I wanted them to look more dried-up than bloated and oozing. I think I'll be needing more than these five, so I'm gonna expand the group at some point.

  1. Terrific! Collectively, they remind me of the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark when the protagonists stumble into a chamber full of mummies. They've got that same dusty, desiccated look - just perfect!

  2. nice work with those Mantic zombies

  3. Interesting to see the skeletons made relatively monochrome - what I like about the sculpts is their clothing so I tend to slap brighter colors on those areas

    Anyways, looking good!

  4. That's some amazing undead! I like how the skeletons are definitely monochrome, but their shields and swords manage to incorporate both warm and cold colors, that's really good. Empty and 'loose' faces of the zombies are also a very nice touch :)

  5. Again that is some beautiful work, can't get enough of your painting style :)
I must agree, the Mantic zombies are great, I was hoping GW would get around to updating their zombies with all the undead releases we've had over the last couple of years.

    1. Thanks! Yes, I'm still confused by GW not releasing a new zombie kit. The one they still have is so in clash with their modern plastic minis it's ridiculous.

  6. Nice, all grungy and grimy and ancient. Sort of reminds me of the bit in the 1980 Conan movie when he takes refuge from the wolves in the old tomb and finds the Atlantean sword that's still good even tho it's covered with rust.

  7. Wow, just changing the heads and weapons really can make those Mantic skeletons look good. I have largely kept away from Mantic, as I have found most of their stuff to look wonky and caricatured, but not in the enjoyable nostalgic way of old GW sculpts. I think the monochrome and dull color scheme helps them, too.

The zombies look superb, as well. GW’s zombie kit really does need an update. It is one of the oldest multipart kits that they make. If they produced something with zombies similar to those seen in the Corpse Cart model, I would be thrilled.

Thanks for giving me reason to pay attention to the miniatures of companies other than GW.

    1. It pays off to expand your bits search to other manufacturers. GW makes a huge number of fantastic plastic kits, but there are so many others you can source from, and make your minis even more unique.

  8. These look great and suitably dusty and grimy from the grave.

  10. Wow, these are perfect. Your work is amazing.

I've been pondering using mantic skeletons with head swaps, but was having trouble sourcing gw skulls (I actually quite like the helmeted ones)

Could I possibly ask where these skulls come from?

    1. Thanks! Certainly. The one in the centre has a GW head, from the Black Riders kit. The other helmeted head is converted from a Perry Miniatures medieval soldier's. The three bare heads are skulls from Alien Lab Miniatures, with a bit of putty.

  11. How did you make them look so dried out? I love you work!

    1. Thanks! Agrellan Earth for ckracked skin, applied in a few places. You can achieve the dusty look over that with powder pigments or highly matte paints. Typhus Corrosion was likely involved as well. I can't really remember anymore exactly what I did. :D
