CXCVIII. An Unplanned Aelf Warband

I was at a gaming show a few weeks back, doing all-day painting demos again. There were sprues of sea elves, and I decided to see what can be done with minimal converting and an unconventional (for high elves) paintjob. When my test model turned out surprisingly cool, I wanted to make some more. I allowed myself greater freedom with the others, though - they were converted using putty.

An elven mage, Venthadror the Sage, with his guards. The mage is also a converted Seaguard. Trimmed off a lot, and just sculpted some more robe on top. And fully closed the helmet.

Venthadror's guards, including their captain. Lothern Seaguard with some minor changes. The one on the right was the test model.

The mage's pet salamander, Vurlien. The model is RAFM Miniatures giant newt. I love the sculpt. It's meant to have a reptilian rider, which I didn't use.

All the elves. The ranger is an experiment from a few months ago. He fits nicely with those guys.

I also had a bunch of these Space Marines. Since the first two days at the show were slow (weekdays), I asked my followers on Instagram to give me ideas for what to do with Space Marines. I got a lot of suggestions, and picked a few from those. Some turned out better than others, but it was definitely a fun exercise. I think the leopard is my favourite.

  1. Stunning work yet again :) I'm not a huge fan of Aelves/Elves, but I like the different take on these........being much murkier and worn.

Any chance of a close up or WIP on those shields? Magnificent Green Man imagery on them!

    1. Thanks! I'm not a fan of elves either.

The green man design on the shields came from the shield of the Bretonnia Green Knight mini. I simply made a press mould with Oyumaru and made casts in Magic-Sculpt. Took them out of the moulds while they were still bendy so they could be glued against the slightly curved shields of the Elves.

    2. Green Knight shield, eh? Very inventive. I'll have to see about getting a hold on one as Green Man imagery like that would fit very well with my "Pans Children" concept I'm cooking up for next year

  2. Wow. Those elves look great. I hope to see more. The SMs are interesting too. I like the leopard one best also.

  4. Mind sharing how you achieved that reflective finish effect on Venthadror's helmet? It's rad as hell!

    1. The helmet was painted flat black, with a bit of splatter. Then it was coated with Vallejo still water to gloss it up. It gives a better gloss than the gloss varnish I have.

  5. You took these to another level once again. I love it.

  6. Very cool stuff. I like how Venthadror is cut off from the usual mundane ways of interacting with the world, connecting solely through his magic.

All of the Space Marines look pretty cool, too. The Leopard is the best of them, but I really like the pointillist and ghostly ones as well.

  7. I really like the Aelves, they've got a nice gritty dark fantasy vibe now.

Just shows what can be done to some "basic" plastic miniature figures, a touch of conversion and an appropriate colour scheme.

It's this sort of project I hope inspires others to try their hand at personalising their miniatures.

  8. I like the leopard space marine, but for me it's more like green scales than leopard if you don't looke very close. And those eyes... this is no armour...
