CLXXI. Bloodfiend Sculpt

The Great Unclean One from last week revived my ambition to get decent at sculpting. For practice, I made one of my own monsters from scratch.

Ravenous Bloodfiends are spirits of ancient warhorses. According to legend, warriors of old used to feed their steeds with flesh, thus turning them into fierce carnivorous beasts. The Countess now summons them to do her bidding. These guys go far back. The original conversions featured in the blog's second post.

I'll do another one. I'm very satisfied with the skull, but I'm not happy with the legs. Constructive criticism is welcome, so if you have something to say fire away.

I speed-painted the beastie as soon as the putty was cured:

This is the sculpted Bloodfiend next to an old converted one. As one can see, the design itself slightly evolved in the meantime:

  1. Wow, how awesome. Compared to the original version, so much has changed. Its very intersing, when you expresses your vision freely with your own sculpts. I like it a lot, thank you!

    I really like it.

    Great work!

  4. Really good work. He looks like an evil chess piece. Is he built around a metal frame or solid green stuff?

    1. Thanks! Yes, there's wire underneath, going through both legs, the body and the head.

  5. That is really impressive work on the horse skull. Those are always creepy enough anyhow, but then the emaciation and missing arms/forelegs really take it over the top.

As I understand it, horses are omnivores, and will eat meat, in some cases preferentially. There doesn't seem to be any major pattern in our world of this turning them into aggressive predators, tho, fortunately ;)

    1. Cheers! Bloodfiend background was inspired by the Mares of Diomedes.
Though horses will eat meat if fed it, I don't think they can be classified as omnivores like, say, pigs. Their digestive system is specialized for a different kind of diet. But I'm not a horse expert by any means. :-D

    2. Yeah, I was more thinking "omnivore" in contrast with, say, some of the more extreme obligate carnivores, that can't even digest most plant matter.

And pigs really do take "omnivore" to an extreme. Not much can live on as wide a variety as they do. Basically any biological material other than keratin or chitin, I believe.

  6. You are not happy with the legs? Wow, I see perfection all over the composition, it's absolutely great!

    1. Thank you! I guess I'm my own biggest critic.

  7. Now that I see the comparison, I like the new one better, especially because of the hooves which are more fitting. I would prefer a bit more fur on the neck, a longer mane. And I am missing the spike on the head.
Talking about missing, why did you remove the soundtrack on your blog?

    1. The music player widget kept randomly breaking down (blogger bugging out, probably), so I finally retired it.

    2. Fortunately I found it on Soundcloud and I start it everytime when reading new posts on here.

  8. Wonderfully creepy! I am awed by your horse-skull-sculpting skills!
